So you've been thinking about trying boxing. Maybe you've seen it on Instagram, heard a friend rave about their class, or you're just tired of the same treadmill routine. Whatever brought you here, you're making the right call.
Boxing fitness is one of the most effective, engaging, and genuinely fun workouts you can do. And Atlanta has a growing number of places to train. But if you've never thrown a punch in your life, walking into your first class can feel intimidating. This guide removes all of that uncertainty.
I'm Mike Starr, founder of Starr Boxing in Atlanta. I've introduced hundreds of beginners to boxing, and I've seen the same questions and fears come up over and over. Here's everything you need to know before your first session.
1. You Don't Need Any Boxing Experience, Seriously
This is the number one thing that stops people from trying: "I don't know what I'm doing." Neither did anyone else when they started.
A good boxing coach (and a good boxing class) assumes zero prior knowledge. You'll learn how to stand, how to move, how to form a fist correctly, and how to throw your first jab before you ever hit anything. The technique is taught from scratch in every beginner class.
Starr Boxing tip: At our group classes, we've had doctors, teachers, stay-at-home parents, and athletes all start on the same day with zero experience. By the end of the first hour, everyone is throwing combinations and feeling like a boxer. The learning curve is faster than you think.
The only thing you need to bring to your first class is willingness to try. Everything else is teachable.
2. What to Expect at Your First Boxing Class in Atlanta
Different gyms and trainers structure their classes differently, but here's a general framework for what a beginner boxing fitness class looks like:
Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)
Most sessions start with a dynamic warm-up, jumping jacks, footwork drills, light shadowboxing, and mobility work. This gets your body ready, gets your heart rate up, and gives you a chance to loosen up before any instruction.
Technique Instruction (10–20 minutes)
This is where you learn. The coach will demonstrate and walk you through the basic punches (jab, cross, hook, uppercut) and defensive movements. You'll practice in the mirror, on pads, or on the bag depending on the class format.
Main Workout (20–30 minutes)
The bulk of the class, combinations on the bag or mitts, conditioning drills, footwork work, and sometimes partner exercises. This is where you get the serious burn. Expect to sweat.
Cool-Down & Stretch (5–10 minutes)
A proper cool-down protects your muscles and helps your body recover. Good coaches always include this.
Total class time is typically 45–60 minutes. At Starr Boxing, our group classes run one hour and always include coaching on proper technique, not just cardio.
3. What Gear Do You Need?
For your very first class, you need almost nothing. Here's the breakdown:
For Your First Class (Bring These)
- Athletic clothing, anything you'd wear to the gym. Shorts, leggings, a t-shirt. No special boxing gear needed.
- Water bottle, a large one. You'll need it.
- Athletic shoes, running shoes or cross-trainers work fine to start. Wrestling shoes or boxing shoes are better long-term but not necessary on day one.
Most reputable boxing classes provide loaner gloves and hand wraps for first-timers. Always ask in advance when you book.
Once You Decide to Continue (Invest In These)
- Hand wraps ($8–15), protect your knuckles and wrists. Non-negotiable once you're training regularly.
- Boxing gloves ($40–80), 12oz for women, 14–16oz for men training on the bag and with pads. Your coach will advise on the right weight.
- Athletic clothing, same as above, just a few more sets so you're not doing laundry every day.
Don't over-invest before you've tried it. Buy the minimum to start. Once you're hooked (and you will be), your coach can guide you toward the right gear at the right price points.
4. What Type of Boxing Class Is Right for Beginners in Atlanta?
Not all boxing classes are the same. Here's a quick breakdown of the main formats you'll find in Atlanta:
Group Boxing Fitness Classes
The most common and most beginner-friendly format. Classes are led by a coach with a group of 5–20 people. You work on bags, pads, and conditioning. Great for community, motivation, and affordability. Best for most beginners.
1-on-1 Personal Training
Private sessions with a boxing coach. More expensive but faster results and completely personalized. Great for people with specific goals (weight loss, athletic performance) or who want to fast-track their technique. Ideal if you prefer individual attention.
Online Boxing Classes
Live or recorded classes via Zoom or video. Great for people with busy schedules or who can't make it to a gym. Our Cardio Boxing Live program runs Mon–Thu at 8pm, all you need is a mat and 2-lb weights.
Boxing Events (like Trap Boxing)
Large-group boxing experiences set to music. Not the best starting point for learning technique, but an incredible way to experience boxing energy and get introduced to the sport in a fun, zero-pressure setting.
5. How Quickly Will You See Results?
Boxing is one of the most calorie-dense workouts available. A 60-minute boxing session burns between 500 and 800+ calories depending on your intensity and body weight. For context, an hour of running burns roughly 400–600 calories.
Here's a realistic timeline for boxing fitness results:
- Week 1–2: You'll notice improved energy levels, better sleep, and elevated mood. Boxing triggers significant endorphin release, you'll feel the difference almost immediately.
- Week 3–4: Your cardiovascular endurance starts improving noticeably. You'll be less winded during class.
- Month 2: Visible body composition changes. Most consistent trainees notice improved muscle tone in arms, shoulders, core, and legs.
- Month 3: Significant fat loss for those training 2–3x per week and paying attention to diet. At Starr Boxing, we regularly see 15–30 lb transformations in the 3–6 month window.
Results depend on consistency (aim for 2–3 sessions per week), nutrition (boxing can't outwork a bad diet), and quality of coaching. Which leads to the most important factor...
6. How to Choose the Right Boxing Coach in Atlanta
Your coach matters more than the facility. A great coach can make a mediocre gym world-class. Here's what to look for:
- Beginner-focused curriculum, do they actually teach technique, or just run you through drills?
- Accessible communication, do they answer questions, correct your form, and engage with students?
- Proven results, testimonials, before/afters, and client success stories
- Safe environment, professional equipment, manageable class sizes, no pressure
- Passion for the craft, the best coaches genuinely love boxing and it shows
